In 2026, I met a King’s Scholar. His profile reveals more criteria that may lead to a successful outcome. This particular school is capable of delivering a King’s Scholar when the conditions align. The difference between 0 King’s Scholar and 1 King’s Scholar is the difference between impossible and improbable. Therefore a quick deep dive into this Kings’s Scholar will give us clues in how to democratise elite education and what are the key areas to focus so anyone can maximise their chances to be competitive at the King’s Scholarship level.

Well done to this gentleman on his achievement. There are more global entries into the King’s Scholar roll in recent years (South Korea and Singapore) and the usual nearby schools are still delivering King’s Scholars. Competition is likely to be as fierce as ever.

I assume he completed all the exams to a high standard, so he is very well rounded academically. He is the captain of their house, similarly to Harry Potter leading Griffindor to victory. He is a good sports man. Team sports are important. He wins prizes in Drama, Classics, and Music. He must also have a very charming and likeable character to be selected by the Eton Housemaster.

This school is able to provide a pathway to King’s Scholarship, and this kid may also be able to reach Kings’ Scholarship with another school. He did it with this school. The school culture encourages kids to read more books, undertake UK Maths Challenge, debating, and each year seems to centre on a drama production that would have likely contributed to the success. Resilience is a big feature of this school. The teachers who prepared him for the exams, and taught classics would likely enable him to standout from other boys.

A kid spends time in school and at home at the other time. His family clearly created an environment which enabled his success. All the best of luck to them. Hence, BE a Scholar Tuition believes parent involvement in their child’s education is vital.

So can everyone achieve King’s Scholarship?

No. There are only 12 places per year and there is a very detailed long 2-year process to follow through. The outcome is highly determined by the housemasters who look to complement their houses with a range of characters that they believe would strive in Eton. My personal opinion is that Eton is looking for influential and ambitious future leaders and not every child would strive to be one. Is it achievable to reach a level competitive to King’s Scholar? Yes. This blog has highlighted the key aspects of getting to this level.

1. Be curious, at a selected number of subjects if study resource is limited. I wrote about optimising the study resource in terms of time, funding, and environment.
2. Read lots of books and write lots to improve creativity and communication. Lots of book reviews will help to collate all the reading.
3. Debating to be able to convince others and defend your points of view. Classical rhetoric may be a good starting point.
4. Take part in drama, (Live performance) battling nerves will enable optimal performance in interviews. Lots of practise in public speaking and performance may help.
5. Team sports, or other people interacting activities like orchestras are good experience in playing your part to reach a collective goal and eventually take a more influential and leadership role.

The fact that this school has the secret recipe that provides the environment for a successful King’s Scholar, means I just need to understand what the school does and combined with what did he do to define a level that is competitive to Kings Scholarship. I believe this will lead to each kids to be very capable at the areas that want to be in and likely to be able to do what they want to do.

However, will people question his achievements?
