Episode 46 – From Concept to Reality – part 1

Value and Deliverables

The benchmark from Episode 45 shows that I am a few templates, programmes, and key performance indicators (KPIs) away from some sort of “business”. While every private tuition is trained on answering every and any questions under the sun, I instead want to use our curiosity to find the questions that when asked to a more experienced individual, they would take the time to think and respond from their knowledge and experience and we can learn more. Here, we focus on “how” we learn, instead of “what” we learn.

Templates

Templates are like worksheets which can lead the student’s thinking and provides the supervision.

  1. Know the student template – Introduction to yourself, aspirations, hobbies, likes / dislikes, etc. Quarterly review to capture changes in aspirations (See Episode 18)
  2. Define the format of your portfolio. Writing / images / videos (See Episode 35)
  3. Mind-mapping template – graphical representation of potential topics of interests. The ‘Structure’ within EASI way to study.
  4. Notebook format (pen and paper / or virtual)– Writing style templates (See Episode 24)
  5. Study routine questionnaire for optimisation – Self reflection of the study routine, how to improve EASI-ly? (See Episode 36)
  6. Book review template – Reading a book can provide a recess from studying and may find inspiration from a detailed review. (See episode 24)
  7. Information organisation questionnaire – What is the current information organisation system? Is technology fully utilised? When you take notes, what is the likelihood of revisiting that note?

Programme

The programme is the journey that I am creating, which is to read lots of books, to practise writing different styles to communicate different ideas and continuously search for the aspiration with the growth mindset that every step is leading to the successful outcome.

  1. Reading club – Detailed book review of the plot, and writing style with an objective to gain as much insight as possible from each book.
  2. Writing club – Practise various writing styles, if Science subjects then I apply the outline approach inspired by Prof. George Whitesides, Harvard University (A standard of research papers).
  3. Aspiration club – Research the key topics based on fundamental curriculum subjects that will convince the Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to take their time to respond by using classical rhetoric approach with a balanced argument and a suitable arrangement.

Key Performance Indicators

The Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) will show progress and ensure that this is a suitable approach to continue.

  1. Recent exam results and grades – Improvement should be evident. We apply a root cause analysis to reveal underlying factors of the initial exam results.
  2. Update frequency – We define an indicator of motivation to ensure continual enjoyment of doing what the student enjoys.
  3. Portfolio update rating – I will assess from a set of specifications to ensure relevance to the Programmes. For example, the Reading club, how insightful are the reviews?
  4. Time spent on Portfolio – Ensure a balanced study schedule. One cannot spend too much time on it.
  5. Who cares indicator (optional) – Number of people cares. I care and will use collective curiosity to build the quality of the content so others will care. (This is a Whitesides inspired measure, Did we write it to ourselves only?)

Other specifications

There are other aspects that we consider to be very important. Health and Safety is from my Aerospace experience.

  1. Internet safety is the priority, Alias / Pseudonym should be used – Parental guidance and localised internet community will help comment moderation. Portfolio should be set to private.
  2. People involved are DBS checked.
  3. Accountability. “A pen is mightier than a sword”. Write responsibly.
  4. Safety, Alias / Pseudonym – Parental guidance, localised internet community. Page set as private will provide a protected environment to develop the portfolio.
  5. A relaxed approach, small changes to our routine should be sustainable compared to New Year Resolutions. We are looking for evolutions not revolutions. Everyone is great as they are.
