Episode 35: Youtube insights and as a portfolio?

Introduction

This episode is about four Youtubers that I found interesting. At BE a Scholar Tuition, I encourage the creation of a portfolio. The media format can be flexible so even Youtube is a platform for a portfolio of videos. I personally like to write and practise writing hence I am still in wordpress. However, the Internet is an uncontrolled environment, so I advocate the use of a private site or anonymous / alias. Parents and children really need to navigate together. I want to share the Youtubers (number of subscribers in June 2023) that I really enjoy their creations.

  • Musicalbasics / Lionel Yu / We are one (1.24M) – Remix style of piano and is living his dream of becoming a professional pianist.
  • Davie504 (12M) – A very popular bass guitarist who raised profiles of other bass players such as Charlie Berthoud, who is incredibly skillful.
  • Joseph Carter the Minkman (1.4M) – Real life Paw Patrol, Pokemon trainer for natural pest control approach. Real life application of biology.

Disclaimer: The purpose of this post is to highlight their perseverance, passion, their knowledge and most importantly their individuality. What are your favourite Youtubers? Please comment below to share great content creators.

Musicalbasics

His remix of “Moonlight Sonata” by Beethoven into “Moonlight Sonata Nightmare” is incredible and provided the musical inspiration that I was looking for my kid. He is into electrobeat now (I am not young enough to know what it is). The “nightmare” series mesmerised him for so long that was different to other music. The journey from playing from a small room to venues around the world is so inspirational. The creativity in the improvisations, understanding of music theory, and piano skills are evident in the videos.

There are musical scholarships from these exclusive schools and obviously being excellent in 2 or 3 musical instruments will increase your chances of success. I admire the perseverance, passion, proficiency, and individuality on this channel. All successful Youtubers will have these traits.

Davie504

Davie504 is the most popular Youtuber that I shortlisted here. He is dedicated to the bass and is skillful. I think his personality really shine through in his videos, with his “lack” of emotions and catchphrases. He played in a huge venue in Taiwan with “Twoset” Violins. My favourite aspect about his channel is that he raises other people’s profile and one of them in Charlie Berthoud. His bass playing is beyond incredible, yet very modest. Witnessing a channel going from hundreds of subscribers to over 1 Million actually becomes quite involved and delighted for him. The point is that there are successful people out there who will use their platform to help you and lift you to a higher height (Disclaimer, not everyone will do that)

Their baselines and bass battles are legendary. The Davie504 Origins video provides a great background to his story and gives a personal touch.

The Minkman

This is a more random one. Joseph trains dogs, minks, and raptors to hunt pests. The bond that he has with his animals is incredible. The mink is not supposed to be domesticated but he did it. He combined Pokemon and Paw Patrol. He trained a raptor and his team of pups will go and save the day for the farmers. He offers a natural way of controlling the pest populations without resorting to poison, or traps. I think Animal Rights Activists may take a different view. We can take multiple ethical positions and discuss.

His passion and dedication for his animals, to understand them and care for them requires so much knowledge and experience in their biology. Minks are crazy vicious. In some sense, I do feel sorry for the pests since they are given the tough choice of a slow death from poison or a quick “natural” death by predation. The animal kingdom is not always so rosy.

So what about this site?

These Youtubers showed that passion, dedication, perseverance and combined with their individuality can really make special content. A video format is a great basis for a portfolio. One would work on their video editing, script writing, confidence in front of camera, speech etc. Maybe one day each “Episode” will have an accompanying video. I think the dedication, and perseverance are inspiring attributes. I am 6 months in and have 35 posts. I have one and half years until my little one reach 8 years old. I am still on track! I believe on completion of this project that I will be in a better position to guide my two children. My next post will be on focusing on my individuality to build a portfolio (this website).
