Introduction
Jon Hipkiss gave an insight into his journey into being a comedian in the previous episode. There are 5 traits which are really important to expand further and how these traits are covered by the portfolio building approach.
What are the takeaways?
- Passionate about a topic, where he found in comedy and a role model in comedian style in Robin Williams.
- He defined his personal style and is confident in his approach to comedy.
- The ability to perform live is critical for each show. Each show is an opportunity to connect with the audience and build experience.
- Resilience from setbacks and public opinions and an ability to move on to the next show.
- Modified his lifestyle in terms of work hours, dietary and wellbeing.
The BE a Scholar Tuition portfolio approach encourages students to find a topic of interests to research further and construct a knowledge-base which they can draw confidence from. A portfolio can show personal character development and concept evolution about the topic. Only one person in the world will know how the portfolio evolved.
A solid knowledge-base will provide topics of discussions with other subject matter experts. So it is important to identify experts and role model. Like leading researchers in a discipline or a sports person or a musician or whomever. How the student is different, that may draw more attention from the experts to further refine the student’s portfolio. (they are people who can make a significant contribution / insight to the portfolio.)
A portfolio is a topic to talk about confidently, like my interests in King’s Scholarship so I can talk with different Head of Schools about why their is such a huge gap in the academic level for 13 year olds. Their views offer insights into the characteristics of their schools.
Live performance is important because the student is performing to the best of their abilities in their future interviews. The interview is a LIVE event. We want to show the students to show the best aspects of themselves in the interview to maximise their chances of success.
We also looked at optimising the study routine from Episode 36 where studying should be EASI. Our competitiveness stems from small sustaining changes in our routine to achieve measurable improvements over a timeframe. We increase our understanding of our education environment and make changes to improve the surroundings. The aim is to optimise every minute spent studying for the biggest gain in performance.
