My view on King’s Scholarship evolved after reviewing the exams and process required to be successful. Further information on the King’s Scholarship can be found on Wikipedia. The purpose is to find the brightest 13-year-olds. Or is it? Education is a universal right, but opportunities and environment are definitely unequal. Certain schools seem to have more successful candidates. Is it the water around that area? Or do very few elite schools participate, or is there a “don’t bother” mindset since a state school may not provide the preparation beyond the National Curriculum. The purpose seems to find the brightest 13-year-olds with the right resources around them. The right resources are going to the right schools (fee-paying schools that appear to have cracked the code to complete these exams) or have the tuition and coaching to extend their understanding beyond the National Curriculum level. I want King’s Scholarship to be possible for any child. Any child has the potential to reach that level in the topics that they feel passionate about. Any child can dream and reach their dreams.
My view is that the value of the King’s Scholarship is in the difficulty level. If a child can reach that level by their own accord (with guidance from me). The following may happen.
- Mindset changed – A positive mindset to know that the child can understand these concepts. If not, they can ask teachers / and peers to extend their knowledge. Asking questions is essential and encouraged.
- Enjoys learning – A positive mindset will lead to more enjoyment in learning. The context will make the subjects more interesting, and add further fuel to their motivation.
- Curious about the world – The General paper questions motivate the child to increase their awareness of world events and help them to understand their importance to the future of this world.
- Confidence – Be confident in their own abilities and resilient in every scenario. They can complete the exams and interviews without any issues and can express their own unique personality to the interviewers to make the best case for selection.
- Understands failure – Failure occurs and how to react, and recover are the more important parts. Be kind to themselves and keep their inner peace.
Technology/the internet is a great leveller. Information is widely available. The vast amount of information can also be stored electronically in an organised manner. The child can see more and remember more. I am confident on this my approach and guidance.
I am meticulous in the content I create because there are no secret ingredients. I do not want to introduce bias nor my view point only particular topic. They just have to wake up and look in the mirror because they have the secret ingredient.
Any resemblance with “Kung Fu Panda 1” is purely coincidental.
