Episode 13 – General I and General II.

General papers (5 questions) assess the candidate’s logic (reasoning, understanding of language make-up, and Mathematical logic), comprehension question General II Q1 and writing 700 words in General II Q2.

I like the writing in General II Q2 because the topics are very philosophical and relevent to recent events. What the candidate write and how they write will demonstrate their understanding of the world. I think the examiners are interested in how they put there ideas across convincingly. E.g. “Overall happiness of the population is the best measure of the progress of a society.” (2021 General II) and “As a leader, is it better to be loved or feared?” (2020 General II). These topics are very grown-up in my opinion, and the thoughts will change as each child grows up.

Subscribe to this page for future updates on the General papers. Feel free to email me at derek@beascholartuition.co.uk for comments on you essay* on a KS General II Q2 topic, and I will review it as per how I review scientific research papers for major journals during my academic career.

*I will use the essay (anonymously) for future updates.

Therefore, there are 5 parts to the General questions.

Part 1 – writing

In the future, there will be episodes on the writing to cover the 700 words essay.

  1. What makes a convincing argument.
  2. How to write a paper.
  3. How to write concisely.
  4. Interview with a lawyer (why the right word matters).

Part 2 – Reasoning / Logic

  1. Go through the reasoning / logic questions.

Part 3 – Language – make up

  1. Understanding the fundamental concepts behind each questions. (There is a pattern there)

Part 4 – Comprehension type questions.

  1. Discuss an approach and preparation.

After these episodes, the candidate will have an additional perspective to tackle these questions.
