Episode 2 – What is King’s Scholarship? – Updated

The post below is dated February 2023

My understanding has evolved three months from the post below. I reviewed most of the paper and started to guide students to aspire to a high academic level. I further refined my approach and created the study map below.

I am passionate about travelling and lived in London during my childhood. The BE a Scholar Tuition approach is focused on English and writing, Sciences and Mathematics. I used the “Circle” line as in inspiration for English and Writing because I will go around in circles to continuously improve the content, and one can start from any station. The Sciences and Mathematics lines have a lot of overlap. The interchange stations show possible synergies in the topic between multiple subjects. I am confident of finishing each station with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI will change the way we learn. If a child can visit all the stations and gain awareness of the topics required. I believe they will be competitive in the King’s Scholarship process.

To conclude this episode,

I drew a map that shows what BE a Scholar Tuition will cover in terms of topics. My approach is based on motivation and interests for each child to enjoy their studies. The use of AI will identify all the knowledge and learning gaps. Each child will have a balanced foundation to realise their future aspirations.

The post below is dated November 2022.

King’s Scholarship is a set of exams that certain public schools use to identify the “Top” 13-year-olds. The difficulty is beyond the Common Entrance exams.

The King’s Scholarship exams must be the most demanding set of examinations that any 13 yr old can take. (Please leave a comment below if you can think of a harder set of exams for 13 years old.) The candidate must do 8 exams, with 5 compulsory subjects from English, Creative Writing, Mathematics A, Science, and General I and at least three of the optional papers (French, Latin, Greek, Mathematics B, General II and History-Geography-Divinity). For some schools, you will probably write a personal statement and complete an interview.

The sheer number of exams really is mind-blowing. 8 papers are a lot to prepare for. I would pick Mathematics B, General II, and History- Geography-Divinity / as optional ones. This journey starts from year 4 or 5 in school years, which is about 8 or 9 years old. These are not for state school pupils, judging by the boys who win the scholarship at Eton and maybe there are little reasons for state school pupils to go over and above the national curriculum.

I looked at the exam papers, and they are difficult. The exam duration is 90 minutes with 100 marks, so that gives a clear indication of the time allocated to answer each question. The candidate after reading the question must know the right method or approach to find the answer. In my opinion, two scenarios that can play out.

  1. Possible to complete. The papers are so tricky that only about 14 candidates complete them to a high standard. So the Roll selection is a simple process.
  2. Impossible to complete. The papers are so tricky that rarely any candidates can complete them, hence the examiners remind the importance of showing the full workings and logic behind each answer. The Roll selection may need to account for overall performances in different subjects, interviews, and personal statements.

I will look to cover both scenarios, assuming the papers are designed to be completed correctly, so I need to prepare the candidates the understanding to complete the papers that I am proficient in, Mathematics A + B, Science, General 1 and 2. In addition, I will look at the preparation for interviews and personal statements to ensure the candidate will be competitive in every aspect.

To conclude this episode,

King’s Scholarship (KS) is at a higher academic level than the National Curriculum. I am assuming that the Scholars can complete the exams, which sets the benchmark. So I need to prepare the candidates for that level. In addition, detailed preparations for the interview and personal statements will make their cases competitive.
